A step towards Economic Growth

“Demonetization- The Mantra to end Corruption and Black Money”

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan interacted with the participants of  Youth Parliament 2016 and People against Corruption on 23rd of  November, 2016 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Basheerbagh. The agenda for the session was “Black Money, Corruption, Tax Control and their Impact on Society”. Dr. JP recommended certain steps for better execution of the demonetization move, such as, introducing the Service Guarantee Act, reforming elections, bringing reforms in real estate, removal of 1000 top most corrupt high officials to prove as deterrence to the others, and finally re-introducing Smugglers & Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act, 1976 to curb the illegal transactions with foreign accounts.

Liberalism in India – Past Present and Future: Conference & Book Launch @The Claridges

In honour of SV Raju memory – India’s liberal giant for the liberty movement, Centre for Civil Society, in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation have compiled key liberal voices in India on the theme- Liberalism in India on the Past Present and Future. A conference was hosted at The Claridges to launch the publication in his memory and commitment in creating a freer India.. Dr.Jayaprakash Narayan contributed a paper titled “Liberty & Locus of Power” highlighting the evolution of the ideas in our country, an analysis of the current context and the way forward along with other authors Atanu Dey, Laveesh Bhandari, Barun Mitra, Surjit Bhalla, J P Narayan, Jaithirth Rao, Nirvikar Singh, R Jagannathan, Ashok Desai, Nitin Pai, Parth J Shah, Gurcharan Das, Hindol Sengupta, Seetha Parthasarathy and Lord Alderdice .

A Brainstorming Session on “Research in Healthcare Sector”

FDR Research Team participated in the Brainstorming Session at CSIR-IICT along with prominent medical practitioners, IICT scientists, policymakers and researchers. The session was part of CSIR-IICT’s new initiative called DISHA: Development of Informatics for Societal Health Advancement and the discussion focused on the issues related to healthcare in India with a long term objective to tackle the occurrence, prevalence and treatment of various diseases in our region. The team members brainstormed on building institutional linkages between research institutions, medical professionals and the university students.

“Ignited Minds” – Face to Face Programme with IIT Madras Students @ IIT for Villagers 

On 29th September with Dr.JP participated as the Chief Guest at IIT Madras in the Ignited Minds Programme organized by IIT Madras students. The objective of the programme was bringing awareness among the students on the need for reforms in Indian Administration and how the Rule of Law can be carried to the doorstep of common man. Dr.JP interacted with the students on these issues. He suggested the need to move beyond making wish lists and finding solutions which bring about systemic change and not temporary fixes, such as creating shorter chains between the provider and receiver of a service, decentralization and empowerment of local institutions of governance and the people, the need to create institutions that help individual act on their own self-interest, and promote deliberative democracy among people. Also if people can identify their vote with the delivery of public good, people shall overcome their primordial identities and create a climate where the committed is rewarded and given more authority.

On Economic Freedom @ ipolicy workshop 

At a two-day ipolicy Workshop for Young Leaders for students conducted by Center for Civil Society at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, Dr.Jayaprakash Narayan highlighted the importance of economic freedom for achieving prosperity and discussed what institutions and policies support economic freedom. 

The discussion revolved around the causes of poverty and the lacunae in the current policies pertaining to especially health, agriculture and education. Dr.JP emphasized the need for restructuring policies and the importance of economic freedom in enhancing the prosperity of our country.

The Telegraph organized Bihar Debate discussing the prohibition legislation implemented by the state government. Dr. JP participated in the debate and emphasized to regulate, restrict access, punish liquor-related crimes stringently but not prohibit. Prominent participants at the debate were K.C. Suggestions on Draft National Policy for Women-2016

FDR team participated in the Southern Regional Consultation in Hyderabad and contributed its views on : 1) enhancing women’s representation by ensuring that political parties put up adequate number of credible candidates, but through the natural, competitive political process; 2) curbing violence against women through setting up Local Courts that can check crimes and dispense justice faster to women.

Vision India Boot Camp

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan shared his views about the importance of empowering the Local governments at Vision India Foundation policy Boot camp. He also interacted with Young Scholars of Vision India Foundation and Young India Fellows of Ashoka University in Sonepat. During session of Local Governments Dr.JP said that the Local Governments are the best school of Democracy and an average district in India is bigger than half the countries in the world. Dr.JP purported that the administrative chain can only be compressed only when authority and accountability are aligned and the intellection of governance in post-Independent India resulted in a system of alibi and not of performance.

12th Annual National Conference on Electoral and Political Reforms

Conducted by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) with the purpose of comprehensively deliberating on the electoral and political reforms needed in today’s India.

Dr. Jaya Prakash Narayan addressed a panel discussion on Re-hauling the Electoral System in India. He talked of the issues with first-past-the-post system, which is the current method of electing representatives to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. He stressed on the need for empowerment of local governments through decentralization from the Centre and the states.
